Spray vs. Drip: The Numbers That Matter

Traditional spray irrigation systems are designed to water large areas of turf. They work by spraying water through the air in a broad pattern, which means significant water is lost to evaporation before it ever reaches the soil, especially during Colorado's hot, windy summer afternoons. Depending on the time of day and wind conditions, spray systems can waste 20-40% of every gallon they apply.

Drip irrigation solves this by delivering water directly to the root zone of each plant through a network of small-diameter tubing and emitters. There is no airborne mist to evaporate. Water goes exactly where it is needed, in the amount needed, at the time needed. Drip systems typically achieve 90-95% efficiency compared to 50-70% for spray systems. What a Conversion Involves

Converting from spray to drip irrigation involves removing existing spray heads, capping or modifying the supply lines, and installing a new drip network sized for your specific plant layout. We also install pressure regulators and filters to protect the system, and program your controller with zone-by-zone schedules appropriate for each plant type.

For xeriscape conversions, we design the drip system to match the water needs of the specific plants in each zone. Native plants and drought-tolerant species need far less water than traditional turf, and their water needs vary by species. A well-designed drip system accounts for these differences, running each zone at the right frequency and duration for what is growing there.
